Another week of college football is upon us, and we’ll take a look at a Big Ten East matchup between the Maryland Terrapins and the Michigan Wolverines. Both teams come into this weekend 3-0 with relatively easy schedules. The Wolverines have played the second easiest schedule in all of FBS, while the Terrapins are undefeated after beating their toughest opponent, the SMU Mustangs, last week.

Michigan is coming off a big year in 2021 when they won the Big Ten Conference Championship and made an appearance in the college football playoffs. Their Big Ten Title defense begins Saturday, and they finally made a decision on their starting quarterback. Through most of the non-conference, the Wolverines had J.J. McCarthy and Cade McNamara in a quarterback competition the first couple of games. However, last week Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh gave the reigns to J.J. McCarthy, which isn’t that surprising as he has a higher ceiling than McNamara.

Michigan comes into the game as the heavy favorite against Maryland. The Wolverines are favored by -17 points for Saturday’s contest. This line may seem high for two undefeated teams; however, Michigan should have the advantage at the skill positions and definitely on the defensive side of the ball. We like Michigan to win this game and cover the -17 point spread.

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Michigan has the second-ranked offense in the country

  • The Wolverines average 231 yards rushing per game
  • Michigan is 41st in the country for passing yards per game
  • Maryland is averaging 499 yards of offense per game

The second bet we will look at for Maryland-Michigan will be the Over/Under. Currently, the Over/Under total is 65 points, which is high even for a college game. Both Michigan and Maryland have very high-ranked offenses because both teams have scored a lot of points against inferior opponents. One thing Michigan has that Maryland is lacking is a dominating defense, which has the talent to slow most offenses down. Maryland has a history of starting a season out strong, averaging a ton of points in non-conference games, then watching the offense struggle in Big Ten play against better opponents. We think the Terrapins will struggle against this Michigan defense, pulling down the Over/Under line for this game. We will take Under 65 points for Maryland-Michigan on Saturday.
