MLB Betting Explained

There are lots of different ways you can bet on an MLB game, and with 2,430 regular season games and the MLB playoffs, the wagering opportunities are there to be taken during the entire MLB season. The most popular ways to bet on an MLB match are via the Money Line, Spreads, and Totals markets. In Baseball, the spread is called the Run Line, where the favorite will have to concede runs.

Normally it is set at -1.5 with the underdog that will gain +1.5 runs. Different from the NFL and NBA spreads, the spread won’t usually change in baseball, but it’s the odds that do so instead. Here at BettingPicks4You, we have the best experts to analyze every game of the MLB season and provide the best view on which side of these lines we believe has value, and also why. Make sure to check out our latest MLB Picks and MLB Predictions for all the best today’s games.

Types of MLB Betting

There are lots of different ways in which you can bet on an MLB game, from picking the winner of a match to delving deep into very specific player stats-based prop bets like home runs, strikeouts, and more. Below, we have summarized the most popular types of MLB betting markets, so you have a clear idea of the many options available.

MLB Money Line Betting

MLB Money Line Betting is the easiest way to bet on an MLB game. In a bet on the Money Line, you are just predicting which team will win the match. Since there is no option that a MLB game will end in a tie (with extra innings played), there are only two outcomes in an MLB Money Line market: either Team A or Team B will win. And in the same way, your bet will either win or lose, as there are no pushes or ties possible.

MLB Spread Betting – MLB Run Line Betting

MLB Spread betting is also called Run Line. It is very similar to the NHL Puck Line as the favorite usually gets -1.5 puck line as a handicap while the underdog gets a +1.5 puck line. Differently from the NFL or NBA, the odds change rather than the lines.

When placing an MLB Spreads bet, you are wagering on whether the favorite will win by 2 or more runs or whether the underdog will win or lose by only 1 run. Depending on the teams, you might see the Run Line changing, as in some cases it could be +/- 0.5 runs and in others +/- 2.5 runs. This depends on the gap between the teams involved in the specific game.

You will note that the run line always has a.5 to avoid a tie or push, so one side will always cover the spread and the other one will always lose, and so will the related bets.

MLB Over/Under Betting – MLB Totals Betting

MLB Over/Under betting, also known as the MLB Totals markets, is a type of wager where you need to predict the total number of runs scored by the two teams combined in a given matchup. The sportsbooks will set the line, which is usually in the range between Over/Under 6 runs all the way up to over under 12 runs.

Depending on the game, the sportsbooks will set the line, and in some situations, the line can also fall outside this range, as each game is different and the number of runs expected will vary as they are largely dependent on team form, pitcher matchups, game conditions, weather, and more.

If, for instance, you back the over 7.5 run line, it means that for you to cash the ticket, there would need to be 8 or more runs scored. If you bet the unders on the same line, to win, there would need to be 7 or fewer runs. If you are not too sure which side to back in the spread or money line, but you have a pretty good idea that the match will see high or low scoring, then wagering on the MLB Over/Unders market is a great alternative.

MLB Player Proposition Bets

MLB Player Prop Bets are a type of wager in which you are betting on the proposition of the particular occurrence or not of a specific player-based stat or performance. Similarly to other sports, MLB Player Props are mostly linked with top statistical performance metrics like, for instance, Home Runs, Hits, Stolen Bases, Strikeouts, and so on for certain players.

There are plenty of ways to wager on player props bets during the MLB season, and our experts are providing you every day with the best free analysis and MLB Prop Bets, so that you can make the most of the opportunities in this market. Check out our MLB Prop Bets page for all of today’s action.

MLB Team Proposition Bets

Similarly to MLB Player Prop Bets, MLB Team Prop Bets are a type of wager in which you are betting on the proposition of the occurrence or non-occurrence of a specific event during a game.

The peculiarity of MLB team prop bets is that you are wagering on one team or another, while in the spread, points total, or money line, you need to consider the performance of both teams. For instance, in the Team Runs Total, you are predicting only an over under points total for one team.

This type of bet adds flexibility, as if you are unsure of the spread or not sure if the opposition will score enough points to bring the total to the over, you can just focus on the team you are more comfortable predicting. The same you can do in markets like Team To Score First, First Team To 3 Runs, team to win the first 5-innings and lots more. To get all of today’s MLB Prop Bets check out our dedicated page.

MLB Live Betting

With MLB games that sometimes last a couple of hours and are usually played at a slow pace, there are plenty of opportunities for MLB Live betting MLB Live Betting is when you bet on an MLB game once the match has already started. You will see that bookmakers are updating the odds in real time as they reflect the on-field action.

Despite the fact that there are not as many MLB betting markets available on the live betting tab, you will still have all the most popular markets like Money Line, Spreads and Totals along with a number of props like Race to 5 Runs, and also individual inning winners. More and more sportsbooks are providing this fascinating way of wagering, so it’s worth having a go.

MLB ATS Betting

MLB ATS betting is the equivalent of MLB against the spread betting. This betting market in baseball is also called the run line, where you have one team (the favourite) that will start with either -1.5 runs or sometimes with -2.5 ATS. The line will depend on the two teams, and it is an indication of how big the expected difference between the two teams is.

The underdog will start either with +1.5 or +2.5 runs. In this betting market, you are wagering on the lines rather than the winner of the match outright, so, for instance, the underdog could also lose 7-6 but might still cover the ATS and give you a payout. MLB ATS is one of the most popular ways of betting on baseball, as in some games there is very little value in taking a money line favourite, while it might be far too risky to siding with the underdog to win outright.

The terms tips is most widely used in Europe and in horse racing betting, but the concept is the same as picks and predictions.
