Detroit Tigers ML (-146) over Kansas City Royals

The rationale behind this pick is pretty straightforward – the Royals haven’t managed to clinch a single victory in the 14 games that Jordan Lyles has started. With a 6.89 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP in his 79.2 innings, Lyles has proven to be one of the most targetable pitchers in the league. His performance on the road is particularly concerning with a bloated 9.10 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.

The Tigers, though not boasting a stellar offense, can likely capitalize on Lyles’ vulnerability. Rather than endorsing the Tigers, this bet is more a vote against Lyles. The Tigers’ starting pitcher, Reese Olson, is Detroit’s 11th-ranked overall prospect and the latest addition to the rotation. Despite a poor outing against the potent Braves, his overall performance suggests he will fare better against Kansas City’s lineup. Backing the trend, I’m wagering on another Royals’ loss with Lyles pitching.

Minnesota Twins (-135) over Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox, fresh off a sweep over the Yankees, appear to have regained their stride. Despite their inexperienced pitching roster, they allowed only eight runs throughout the series. However, their unpredictability makes them difficult to forecast. Although the Twins have a worse record, they’re leading in their division.

Their offense has been weak, their lone victory during a poor weekend being a 2-0 shutout. The upcoming home series will be crucial for them, especially considering their nine subsequent away games. Boston’s James Paxton has performed well this season, but he’s been noticeably better at home than on the road.

The Twins’ Pablo Lopez, while striking out more batters than ever before, hasn’t seen corresponding success in his overall stats. Despite the market possibly overestimating the Twins due to their standing, I’m siding with them based on Lopez’s home performance and Paxton’s difficulties on the road.

Chicago Cubs (-135) over Pittsburgh Pirates

The Cubs, despite their recent win streak being broken, are contending in the NL Central and will strengthen their position with a series win against Pittsburgh. The Pirates are desperate to halt their six-game losing streak and revive their sluggish offense.

Drew Smyly has done a commendable job for the Cubs this season, while Osvaldo Bido, despite a decent major league debut against the Cubs last week, still lacks experience.

The Cubs, currently in better form than the Pirates, are the modest favorites for tonight. While I’m not particularly a fan of Smyly, the Cubs have been on a roll, and I don’t see Bido, who probably won’t last more than five innings, changing that.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs Milwaukee Brewers under 6.5 (+154)

In terms of pitching matchups, this game stands out from the rest. Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks will be up against Corbin Burnes from the Brewers. I anticipate runs to be at a premium.

Kelly’s performance on the road has been noteworthy, and he’ll face a Brewers offense that’s been inconsistent, particularly against right-handed pitchers. On the other side, Burnes, after a rocky start, seems to have returned to form with a 3.44 ERA and a 3.34 xERA over 83.2 innings.

He’s consistently pitched six or more innings in eight of his last nine starts, with over three earned runs only once in that time. Despite the already low series opener total, given the quality of the starting pitchers, I see value in backing an alternative under.
