MLB picks Thursday 6/29: YRFI & NRFI best bets today: Showcasing Lance Lynn and Kyle Hendricks

Chicago White Sox vs Los Angeles Angels: YRFI (-110)

Our second selection for Thursday’s betting card takes us to the American League contest between the White Sox and the Angels. We’re banking on a Yes Run First Inning (YRFI) outcome given the propensity of both starting pitchers to concede early runs. Lance Lynn will be pitching for the White Sox, and despite some recent improvements, he’s had an erratic season, maintaining an overall ERA of 6.40 and giving up 23 runs in his last five appearances.

It’s worth noting that the Angels’ star hitter, Shohei Ohtani, has an excellent track record against Lynn, with a 10-for-21 and three home runs. Patrick Sandoval will be the starting pitcher for the Angels, carrying an expected ERA (xERA) of 4.59 and finding himself in the lower 15% of starting pitchers when it comes to expected batting average (xBA) and strikeout percentage. The odds are good for an early run in this game, and I’m backing it.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago Cubs: NRFI (+105)

Among several games offering positive odds for a No Run First Inning (NRFI) wager, this matchup stands out as a bit perplexing. Kyle Hendricks, the Cubs’ pitcher, has been displaying his vintage prowess, even if his strikeouts are noticeably fewer than usual. His career statistics include an allowed Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA) of 0.292 during the first rotation of the batting order. While the Phillies have shown recent improvements, their offensive performance in the last 30 days remains around the league’s average.

Taijuan Walker will be on the mound for the Phillies. The Cubs’ offense has been lackluster in the past month, managing only an 89 Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+). Walker tends to walk more batters than desired and lacks in strikeouts, but he has still managed to become a reliable league-average pitcher. His allowed wOBA during the first rotation in 2023 stands at 0.298. Given the Cubs’ offensive struggles, Walker is poised to better that statistic in today’s game.
