New York Yankees Vs. New York Mets: YRFI
The New York Yankees managed to stage an impressive comeback from a 5-run deficit last night, securing the first game of the Subway Series from the New York Mets. Tonight, they are set to wrap up the concise, 2-game series, with their sights firmly set on a clean sweep as Gerrit Cole prepares to take to the mound.
Cole’s impressive 7-1 record, complemented by a 2.84 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, is noteworthy. Coming off quality back-to-back performances against formidable teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox, Cole has managed to keep a clean sheet in the 1st inning in 11 of his 14 outings, an impressive feat considering the absence of Pete Alonso in the Mets lineup. However, the 1st inning has proved somewhat challenging for Cole, with his ERA increasing to 3.86 in this specific inning. He has also been targeted more frequently of late, with all of his 9 homers allowed occurring within his last 7 starts.
Opposing Cole is the Mets’ seasoned pro, Justin Verlander. The 40-year-old, currently in his first season with New York, has found the transition somewhat challenging, battling a career-high 4.85 ERA and a 2.54 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Verlander’s ability to maintain control of the ball has been compromised this season, with 7 homers already surrendered compared to just 12 across 175 innings in the previous season. The veteran pitcher has particularly struggled in the opening innings, conceding more runs in the 1st inning than any other. On paper, this matchup promises to be a gripping duel, even more so in the absence of Pete Alonso and Aaron Judge. Given both teams’ aggressive approach in the last game, it would be reasonable to anticipate a similar dynamic tonight, making an early run in Queens a distinct possibility.
Washington Nationals vs. Houston Astros: NRFI
The Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros’ face-off is primarily highlighted by the contrasting fortunes of two key pitchers – Josiah Gray and Framber Valdez.
Gray might just be the most improved player for the Nationals in 2023. He finished the past two seasons with an ERA over five but has shown notable progress in 2023. Midway through the current season, he boasts a 4-5 record, a commendable 3.00 ERA, and an impressive 61 strikeouts. In his 12 starts this season, he has allowed more than three earned only three times.
While Gray’s improved performance doesn’t quite put him in contention for a Cy Young award – his advanced metrics indicate a potential negative regression – his ability to secure three quick-outs should not be understated.
Valdez, on the other hand, is arguably the star performer in the Astros’ rotation. With a 6-5 record and a remarkable 2.36 ERA, he’s been a consistent performer. Over his past seven starts, he’s only conceded three or more earned runs in two outings and has allowed four or more runs just once in 2023.
In terms of their combined performance, both Gray and Valdez have only allowed a run in the first inning in two of their 13 outings, resulting in a combined NRFI record of 22-4. Considering these statistics, it appears to be a safe bet to wager NRFI -130.
