St. Louis Cardinals vs New York Mets – Under 9.5 (-115)
As we move into the afternoon on this intriguing Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets will wrap up their series, having each taken a game apiece thus far. With Friday’s match seeing the Mets claim a 6-1 victory, and the Cardinals seizing a 5-3 win on Saturday, both games have fallen short of today’s run total.
Given the recent struggles plaguing the Mets’ batting lineup, particularly without Pete Alonso, and the Cardinals’ two-week cold streak, I see the high run total as an overestimation due to Sunday’s less-than-stellar pitchers. With Matt Liberatore and Carlos Carrasco on the mound, both maintaining ERAs over 5.00, it’s understandable why the run total is high. However, given Liberatore’s previous strong start and Carrasco’s two quality starts in his last five, it’s plausible to expect a relatively quiet day from the bats, leading me to suggest a bet on the under.
Colorado Rockies vs Atlanta Braves – Over 9.5 (+100)
Moving to the clash between the Colorado Rockies and the Atlanta Braves, my pick for underrated pitcher of the year goes to Chase Anderson. This is not to suggest Anderson is a top-tier pitcher; rather, it’s to acknowledge that his current form doesn’t mirror the mediocrity of his past. Since being pulled into the Rockies’ starting lineup, Anderson has kept hitters to a .244 average and maintained a solid 3.16 ERA across his six starts. He’s given up three or fewer runs in each game and has begun to find his rhythm with 13 strikeouts in his last two games. That said, he’s up against a formidable Atlanta batting lineup.
At the other end of the diamond is Charlie Morton, with a season ERA of 3.60 and a slightly worrying xERA of 4.64 across 75 innings. Despite his numbers slowly inching towards his career peaks, Morton still has the potential to control a game as he did against the Detroit Tigers, shutting them out over 5.2 innings. However, the Rockies pose a different challenge, and with Atlanta’s recent run-scoring prowess, betting on the over seems reasonable.
Los Angeles Angels vs Kansas City Royals – Over 9.5 (-105)
Turning our attention to the Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals, the latter have been having a rough time recently, with a 10-game losing streak and a slide to the bottom of the baseball rankings. However, they found a glimmer of hope with a win on Saturday after coming back from an 8-2 deficit, and with rookie Samad Taylor’s first career hit winning the game, the team should be carrying some momentum into Sunday.
With both starting pitchers, Zack Greinke and Tyler Anderson, performing poorly of late, the stage seems set for a high-scoring game, particularly considering Saturday’s 19-run match.
Philadelphia Phillies -1.5 over Oakland Athletics (-135)
In our final parlay matchup, the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Oakland Athletics. Despite a harsh setback against the Washington Nationals where he gave up seven runs in under four innings, Zack Wheeler of the Phillies has otherwise shown top-tier form. His performance this season suggests he is still a force to be reckoned with. Despite an unassuming 3.73 ERA, his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) of 2.65 is encouraging.
His ability to consistently throw over 100 pitches and a low rate of giving up home runs make him a significant threat, particularly against an Oakland lineup unfamiliar with his five-pitch variety. On the other side, Hogan Harris, known for his disastrous MLB debut, has shown signs of improvement despite some lingering concerns. While the Phillies have historically struggled against left-handed pitchers, their recent improvement puts them in a strong position, particularly against Harris’s heavily relied upon 4-seam fastball. With both bullpens showing inconsistencies, the edge goes to Wheeler and the Phillies to secure a win by a good margin.
