CHI Cubs ML (-130) over PIT Pirates
Coming fresh off a triumphant 8-0 series opener at PNC Park, the Chicago Cubs are putting their trust in RHP Marcus Stroman to nail another victory against the Pirates. Riding the wave of an impressive eight-win streak in their last ten games, the Cubs are steadily clawing their way towards a .500 record. Furthermore, the Cubs have asserted dominance against Pittsburgh with a perfect 4-for-4 record this season. Stroman, on a personal level, has been on a winning roll since May 19th, boasting six consecutive victories. His last noteworthy performance against the Pirates at Wrigley Field proved that he’s up to the challenge, allowing only two runs, four hits, and two walks while striking out five over six innings.
The Pirates, despite their promising 20-8 start to the season, have hit a low point with a seven-game losing streak, and a lackluster 14-29 record since April 29th. Their performance within the division is equally worrisome, having lost seven straight games. The uphill battle against one of the major’s hottest pitchers justifies steering clear of the home team in this instance.
NY Mets vs HOU Astros – Over 7 (-105)
The Mets and Astros clash in the second game of their series, where the total for this game is surprisingly low at seven, considering two stellar pitchers will be stepping onto the mound. Justin Verlander will be representing the Mets in an attempt to silence the Astros’ formidable batting lineup. Verlander, however, is not performing at his usual high level this season, with a 4.40 ERA & 1.22 WHIP, and a significantly decreased K% of 21. While his strikeout rates are lower, he’s been hit hard with increased hard hit and average exit velocity percentages, which could play into the hands of the opposing team.
In the Astros’ corner is Framber Valdez. Despite his impressive 2.27 ERA this season, his expected ERA is significantly higher at 3.83. He has found the strike zone more frequently this year (87th percentile for BB%), but his high hard hit (21st percentile) & average exit velocity (8th percentile) has been somewhat overlooked. Given the worrying statistics of both pitchers and the low scoring projection, I am predicting a higher scoring game.
MIN Twins ML (-145) over BOS Red Sox
Boston Red Sox emerged victorious against the Twins in their series opener with a convincing 9-3 scoreline and 10 hits. However, their track record in the second game of a series has been less than impressive, with only one win in their past six games. The Twins, despite their rough start, are eyeing a comeback with RHP Bailey Ober at the helm. With his season record of 4-3 and a solid ERA of 2.65, the Twins could well turn the tables on Boston.
TEX Rangers ML (-125) over Chicago White Sox
The Texas Rangers square off against the Chicago White Sox in their series’ second game. Despite a decent performance against the Dodgers, Dylan Cease’s season record (4.31 ERA and 1.34 WHIP) paints a different picture. The Rangers have proven to be a tough team to strikeout and could pose a significant threat against Cease.
To add to the White Sox’s troubles, Nathan Eovaldi will be pitching for the Rangers, boasting a phenomenal season record of 2.59 ERA & 0.98 WHIP. Considering the White Sox’s recent offensive struggles, Eovaldi could pose a considerable challenge. I’m placing my bet on the Rangers, who have the better offense and a stronger pitcher.
