Atlanta Braves ML (+100) vs Philadelphia Phillies
The Braves and Phillies will face off once more, following the Braves’ narrow victory yesterday. Atlanta’s rookie, AJ Smith-Shawver, a promising young pitcher with a 1-0 record and a 2.03 ERA, will take to the mound for his third start this season. Although it’s early to gauge his performance, two of the three runs he has conceded were home runs.
Given that the Phillies rank in the lower third in terms of home runs, Smith-Shawver is expected to contain them effectively. He’s not known for lengthy stints, unlikely to extend beyond the sixth inning, but that’s no problem for the Braves with their formidable bullpen. Considering the Phillies’ low walk rate, they will need to depend on getting hits to generate runs against Smith-Shawver who excels at preventing walks.
Opposing him is the Phillies’ Aaron Nola, whose current 4.66 ERA, the highest since 2016, pairs with a 6-5 record. Nola has allowed a home run in most of his starts and conceded four or more runs frequently in recent outings. The Braves’ formidable offense, ranked third in the league in terms of runs scored and leading the MLB in home runs, is expected to capitalize on Nola’s weaknesses. Given the Braves’ low strikeout rate, this game could prove challenging for Nola. I foresee the Braves seizing the upper hand early on, allowing their strong offense and bullpen to dominate the game.
Seattle Mariners ML (-190) vs New York Yankees
The Mariners are set to clash with the Yankees in the Bronx for the second game of their series. Mariners’ right-handed pitcher, Luis Castillo, despite a decent season performance and an impressive 2.73 ERA & 1.02 WHIP, holds a disappointing 4-5 record due to insufficient run support. He sits favorably in the percentile rankings, which coupled with the Yankees’ recent offensive struggles, is expected to pose a challenge for the New York team.
Opposing him for the Yankees is Jhony Brito, whose current performance can be described as troubling at best, evident in his 5.58 ERA & 1.49 WHIP. He ranks in the lower end for most percentile metrics, suggesting a challenging game ahead against a pitcher of Castillo’s caliber. Therefore, placing a bet on the Mariners seems like the logical choice.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Los Angeles Angels – Over 8.5 (-120)
Wednesday night’s LA showdown presents a clear mismatch in starting pitchers, with Dodgers’ Michael Grove facing off against Angels’ Shohei Ohtani. Grove, with an 8.10 ERA, will make his eighth appearance and seventh start this season, raising doubts about his ability to contain the Angels’ batting lineup.
Ohtani, although the superior pitcher, has had his share of challenges. Despite strong percentiles, his walk rate has increased, and he’s registered a 4.76 ERA over his last three starts. His struggle to keep fly balls within the park over recent outings is a concern, especially against the Dodgers who rank third in the MLB for home runs. Given the offensive capabilities of both teams, it’s likely that we’ll see a high-scoring game.
San Diego Padres ML (+100) vs San Francisco Giants
Despite heavy investments, the Padres, currently ranked 21st in scoring, have lost the first two games of the series. Their offensive lineup has seen some bright spots, with Fernando Tatis Jr. leading in home runs and steals, and Juan Soto coming into form. Meanwhile, the Giants are on a winning streak, having secured nine consecutive victories. Despite their consistent overperformance and high ranking in offense, none of
their players has more than 12 home runs.
For this matchup, the Padres are banking on their ace, Yu Darvish, whose inconsistent performance this season has been a concern. The Giants will likely field Ryan Walker as an opener, whose promising figures may secure an early advantage. Despite the Padres being slight favorites due to their potent lineup and Darvish’s potential, it’s hard to bet against the Giants, given their winning momentum and the Padres’ irregular form. Betting in favor of a streak seems like the prudent choice.
