Open Championship Predictions

The Open Championship is the last major of 2022, and our golf experts have come up with all the best picks and analyses to make the most of what should be a fascinating 150th edition at St Andrews.

Key Stat: Apart from 2020, Spieth has at least got one top 3 every year since 2014

Tip Reasoning

  • Jordan Spieth has already won a Claret Jug after his amazing finish of the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale
  • Nine of the last 10 winners at The Open at St Andrews have previously secured the top three in the US Masters
  • Spieth’s form at Augusta is impressive with a win, two seconds and two thirds

Our man for this week is Jordan Spieth, who has already won a Claret Jug after his amazing finish of the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale. He loves playing at St Andrews, where he won in 2015, and we expect him to be one of the top protagonists, once again.

Spieth has been in great form this season, and it is not news that he feels at home with Augusta link. Playing creatively is very important here; the same can be said for the experience. In fact, nine of the last 10 winners at The Open at St Andrews have previously secured the top three in the US Masters. Spieth’s form at Augusta is impressive with a win, two seconds and two thirds, so considering the strong correlations with this course, it is not a surprise that he is one of the favourites in the field.

If we expand our look further to analyse his performance in the majors, we can see that in addition to winning three times, he has also been very consistent and in contention. If we exclude 2020 when the Open wasn’t played, he has at least got one top 3 every year since 2014. The fact that he has yet to win this season would motivate him in Scotland, where he has already started to get acclimatised with last week’s Scottish Open. We believe there is excellent value in backing Jordan Spieth this week at this generous price!

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Finau finished 10th both the times he was involved in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

  • Finau finished second in the Canadian Open last month, and that performance followed the 4th place in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial
  • Finau also secured a 13th place in the Travelers Championship and a second place in the Mexico Open back in May
  • Finau is heading to Scotland in great confidence

If we look at historical data, we can see that experience is essential at St Andrews, but the same can be said for form. Eight of the last 10 Open champions have managed at least one top 10 in one of their previous three tournaments, and on this basis, we do like Tony Finau as our second option for this week. Finau finished second in the Canadian Open last month, and that performance followed the 4th place in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial.

He has also secured a 13th place in the Travelers Championship and a second place in the Mexico Open back in May. So Finau is heading to Scotland in great confidence and would also be more relaxed than many other contenders since he decided not to enter the Scottish Open. St Andrews should suit him well, considering that he finished 10th both the times he was involved in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. So course form is also on his side: Finau has also had three top 10s at the US Masters, and has what it takes to be in contention, so at this generous price, he is undoubtedly worth a wager.
