Key Stat: After two top 10 results in his last four tournaments, McNealy seems to be ready for another upward push
Tip Reasoning
- The 26-year-old won the amateur world championship in 2017 and qualified for the US Open as a youngster
- He finished second twice on PGA Tour last year, but the victory has yet to arrive.
- McNealy said that he likes bentgrass greens which will be used this week

This is a week for big hitters, as seen by Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Davis’ recent victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
So, using this simple approach, Maverick McNealy is my top choice.
Since he clinched the amateur world championship in 2017 and made the US Open as a teenager, the 26-year-old has drawn plaudits from all quarters. Although his rise to the top ranks hasn’t been as quick as some others’, his end-of-year worldwide rating has nevertheless greatly improved: from 662nd in 2018 to 69th in 2021.
He has managed to finish second two times on the PGA Tour, but the triumph has not yet come. After two top 10 results in his last four tournaments, McNealy seems to be ready for another upward push despite a slight pause this season.
In between the two, he traveled to the UK where he managed a tie for 16th place in the Genesis Scottish Open. At the John Deere Classic, he tied for eighth place, and at the Barracuda Championship, he tied for ninth place.
McNealy ranks 32nd in SG: Putting and 42nd in Driving Distance. The American tied for 8th place here in 2020 and tied for 21 place here in 2021, so we can say that the Detroit Golf Club is the ideal venue for him. McNealy said that he likes bentgrass greens, and this is what will be used this week: a bentgrass/poa mix. He provided evidence for these claims by finishing third in SG: Putting in this ground in 2020 and once more interesting results the previous season.

Tip Reasoning
Key Stat: Cameron Champ has won three of his four PGA Tour victories with scores of 15-under or better
- He had a stretch of four missed cuts and a WD in the previous season before getting back on track and winning the John Deere
- he finished tied for 16th at the 3M Open the previous week after five missed cuts so he might be on the up again
- He has course form as he finished with a 66 to tie for 12th in 2020 after finishing second here at halfway in 2019

There is Cameron Champ, whose median drive is 319.7 yards. There is certainly more to him than merely bashing it miles, as seen by his three PGA Tour triumphs (the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship, 2019 Safeway Open, and 2021 3M Open). His four triumphs all involved scores of 15-under or better, including his victory at the 2018 Web.com’s Utah Championship. Consistency doesn’t earn Champ any prizes, but his career track shows that a win could occur as he begins to bounce back from a challenging period.
Last season, prior to getting back on track with an eleventh place finish at the John Deere and winning the 3M Open, he had a run of four missed cuts and a WD. His victories at the Safeway Open and the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship followed “tells,” when he finished 28th at the Safeway Open and 25th at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
In this year’s Masters, Champ entered with the following form: MC-MC-61-67-MC-46-MC-MC-66. At Augusta National, he ridiculed it by placing tied for tenth, and in his second appearance at the Mexico Open, he pushed that to a sixth-place result.
His tie for 16th-place performance in the 3M Open the week prior, which came after five missed cuts, may thus be very significant. The whole of Champ’s performance follows when he generates these changes in momentum. That holds true for the putter as well, and after six events with subpar SGP scores, the flatstick (3.393) helped him perform well at the 3M Open.
This last week, Champ actually said, “I’m doing a terrific job.” It’s also crucial to remember that he started the 3M Open with a 75. In terms of course form, Champ shot a final score of 66 to tie for 12th in 2020 after placing second here at the midway point of 2019. He seems to be on course to provide another instance of his “bounce back to form” performance and looks a good betting option this week.
