Travelers Championship Betting Picks: Back Im To Bounce Back After US Open’s Disappointment

Travelers Championship Predictions

After the great success we had with our picks in the US Open last week, I am back to give you more picks for this week’s PGA Tour event, the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.

Key Stat: Before the US Open, Im was on a good trajectory with a run of five top 25s

Tip Reasoning

  • Finau is ranking 12th for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee and 74th in SG: Putting
  • Course form is not a great indicator here
  • His motivations will be strong after missing the cut at the US Open last week

Sungjae Im didn’t do well at the US Open, as he missed the cut by just a shot, but if we look at the history, we can see that usually, leading players that underperform in a major tend to bounce back in the following event. This is probably down to motivations, as they are very determined to show that this was just a blip and that they can get back on track straight away. One example of this was Jordan Spieth, who missed the cut at Augusta National and bounced back by winning the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head the following week.

Before the US Open, Im was on a good trajectory with a run of five top 25s. His stats also look good as he is 12th for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee and 74th in SG: Putting. Course form is not great, as he only finished tied 21st on debut here and missed the cut the following time, but looking at the history of this competition, we can see that course form is not a particularly strong indicator. Nevertheless, we believe there are excellent chances to see Im bouncing back this week, and the price looks particularly interesting.

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Denny McCarthy finished 7th at the US Open: the first time he makes top 40 in a major

  • McCarthy finished 5th at Memorial in addition to 18th in the Texas Open, 25th at Wells Fargo and 27th at Colonial
  • He ranked 5th, 7th, 7th, 5th and 7th for SG: Putting in the last 5 tournaments
  • McCarthy looks focused and confident right now and keen to improve on his positive trajectory

For our second selection, we have decided to back Denny McCarthy, who was impressive at the US Open and comes from a very positive period of form. He finished 7th at the US Open, and that was a great achievement for him, considering that he has never made the top 40 in five previous major starts. But the Florida player has also shown great consistency lately, as he finished 5th at Memorial in addition to 18th in the Texas Open, 25th at Wells Fargo and 27th at Colonial. His great talent is putting, and in his last five tournaments, he showed that as he ranked 5th, 7th, 7th, 5th and 7th for SG: Putting. At this price, it makes sense to back him as he is in an excellent period of form, and with this confidence, he can indeed be in contention this week.
