We have reached week 10 of the NFL Season with the Atlanta Falcons visiting the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night to kick off the week. This is a matchup between two NFC South Divisional teams who are both struggling to win games on a regular basis. Carolina comes into the game as one of the worst teams in the NFL with a record of 2-7 and having lost four out of five games. Atlanta is actually tied for first place in the division with a 4-5 record on the year. The Falcons come into the game winners of only two out of their past five games.

Atlanta has been one of a handful of surprise teams around the league this year. Picked preseason to vie for the worst record in football, they have played steady on offense and while showing flashes on defense. The Falcons come into the game averaging 24 points per game with their offense led by Marcus Mariota at QB and do everything swiss army knife Cordarelle Patterson, running and catching passes out of the backfield.

The Falcons will be 2.5-point road favorites against the Panthers, which isn’t surprising considering how bad Carolina looked last week against the Bengals. P.J. Walker will get the start over a healthy Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, which is a bit surprising, however, Walker had a good showing a few weeks ago against Atlanta. There is no consistency with any position on the Panthers, so we can’t trust them to cover any spread. We will take the Falcons to win and cover the -2.5 point spread.

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Both teams are giving up 25 points per game on defense

  • Carolina is averaging 20 points per game
  • The Falcons give up 310 passing yards per game
  • Carolina gives up 380 total yards of offense per game

The second line we’ll look at for the Falcons-Panthers game is the Over/Under of 41.5 points. This line is pretty low for an NFL game, which speaks more to the inconsistency of the Carolina offense to score points any given game. Atlanta gives as much as it takes this season because they are averaging 25 points on offense and giving up 25 points on defense. Normally a game involving P.J. Walker and the Panthers offense is a recipe for betting the Under, however, they played a high-scoring game a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta, so this Falcons defense may be what Walker needs to find some offense. We will take Over 41.5 points for Thursday night’s game.
