The Detroit Lions had a 2021 season to forget. Not only did Detroit go 3-13-1, but they swapped their longtime franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford, with Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback Jared Goff, only to watch their old quarterback win a super bowl with a new team in his first year. Detroit has the worst winning percentage for any NFL franchise and we’re not sure it’s gonna get much better this year. Detroit will have Jared Goff as starting quarterback for his second straight year, while they hope Aidan Hutchinson, their 2nd overall draft pick from in-state University of Michigan, can help improve the defense. Detroit also had another 1st round pick, adding a receiving target for Goff, as they drafted Jameson Williams out of Alabama with pick # 12.

Looking at the schedule for Detroit, it always seems daunting for a franchise that is competing for worst record in the league more years than not. They will play the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers twice, the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears to finish out their NFC North schedule. Detroit opens the 2022 season against the Philadelphia Eagles, who are a lot of peoples pick to win the NFC East. They also visit the Cowboys, Vikings, and Patriots in the first 6 weeks of the season as well. It’s tough to see Detroit getting off to a quick start this year, infact we could easily see them 1-5 or 2-4 at best to start the season. The over/under for Detroit is 6.5 wins, which we think is a slam dunk for betting the Under and collecting easy money. We think Detroit will go 5-12 in 2022, so under 6.5 wins is the way to go!

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Detroit has made the playoffs 3 times in 22 years

  • Lions had one of the worst defenses in 2021
  • Jared Goff struggled mightily away from L.A.
  • Lions head coach Dan Campbell is in 2nd year with team

So, when looking for a second good future bet for Detroit, we considered last team to win a game, or team to go 0-17 on the season, but things don’t look quite that bleak. We think Detroit has a couple winnable games early on, with Washington and Seattle visiting the Lions in September. The next bet to make with Detroit is making the playoffs or not? The odds are not ideal, as currently you have to lay 5-1 odds for the Lions not making the playoffs. Unless, you want to bet the Lions will make the playoffs, which considering they have made the playoffs 3 times since the turn of the century, is a risky bet to say the least. So, do we expect Detroit to make the playoffs in 2022? No, we do not. But you have to put down $500 to make $100, which is never fun. However, what’s more fun? Losing $100 when the Lions don’t make the playoffs, or winning $100 when they miss the playoffs!? We will take the safe easy money and bet the Lions to miss the playoffs again in 2022.
