We just completed our 2022 Season Futures for the NFC, and now we are switching over to the AFC. The first team we will take a look at is the Los Angeles Chargers out of the AFC West. It’s been a popular take that the AFC West will not only be the best division in the NFL this year, but one of the best divisions in the last several years. The Los Angeles Chargers are certainly one of the reasons why experts think it’s such a tough division. The Chargers could easily finish first or last in the division and be a few games difference between the two.

LA is hoping their franchise quarterback Justin Herbert, is ready to take that next step and become an MVP caliber player in this league. Herbert is a very good quarterback, but if he can take that next step in his growth, the Chargers could compete for best record in the AFC. The Chargers look to make an improvement on the defensive side of the ball with some new faces. The Chargers signed star defensive end, Khalil Mack, to pair on the other side of pro-bowler Joey Bosa. Between the two star defensive ends, the Chargers should be considered an elite team for quarterback pressures this season. One big question for the Chargers is when will star safety Derwin James get his contract extension. James has said he won’t play until he gets his extension, and that could be a big blow to this Chargers secondary.

So the first futures bet we’re looking at for the Chargers is Over/Under wins. The Over/Under is 10.5 wins for LA this season. For a team with such high aspirations, you would think this number may be a little low. However, competing in a division where they have to play the Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos each twice, it will be hard for any team in this division to pile up wins. We do think the Chargers are a legitimate shot to win the division, so we are going Over 10.5 wins, predicting an 11-6 regular season record.

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Justin Herbert threw for over 5,000 yards in 2021

  • Chargers QB threw 38 touchdown passes last year
  • Herbert averaged 294 yards passing per game last season
  • Herbert had a 65% completion percentage in 2021

Our second Futures bet we will look at for the LA Chargers may have a lot to do with them meeting expectations this season. Justin Herbert comes in as a +1000 odds to win the NFL MVP for the 2022 season. These odds are actually the fourth best odds in the entire league for the upcoming season. To have a shot at an MVP for Herbert, he needs to first cut down on the interception rate. Last year Herbert threw 15 interceptions, which is simply too high for an MVP candidate. Herbert will also have to be protected better by his offensive line, as he was sacked 31 times in total last year.

With wide receiver targets Mike Williams and Keenan Allen healthy, to go along with all purpose running back Austin Ekeler, the passing game should have no shortage of options for Herbert to put up big numbers. If the defense can give the offense more advantageous field position than last year, Herbert should be able to succeed. Considering how the MVP award has turned into a defacto best quarterback award the past two decades, we think Herbert is a great value at +1000 for MVP.
