NHL Betting Guide: How to Bet on Hockey?

Betting on the NHL is very popular in the US, and there are many different ways to place a wager on this sport. The three most popular NHL wagering markets are Money Line, Puck Line, and Goal Totals. The Money Line is the simplest form of NHL betting, as you just need to pick the winner of a particular match. Puck Line, also called NHL against the spread, means backing a team to cover the spread just like in the NBA or NFL.

Goal Totals is an over/under market where the bettors have to predict if the combined goals scored by both teams will be higher or lower than a line set up by the sportsbooks. Here at BettingPicks4You, we analyze all the games of the NHL season, with our experts, who provide analysis and match previews, along with NHL picks accompanied by a complete rationale. Let’s take a closer look now at the most popular ways of betting on hockey.

Betting Online on NHL Betting

Online NHL betting is a quick and simple process, and because NHL betting is so popular, you may find a variety of markets & competitive odds at any top US online sportsbook. Most US sportsbooks have all the main NHL markets, which are money line, spread, and totals, but also cover plenty of NHL Player Prop bets and NHL Team Prop Bets, like goalscorer, team goals, right score, and so on.

The BettingPicks4You experts are available all season to offer the most insightful free analysis of each and every game, including all of the most recent NHL news to take into account. There are a plethora of ways to wager on the NHL online, and by visiting BettingPicks4You, you will make the most of it.

Who To Wager On NHL Tonight

Since there are so many NHL games played every day, choosing a team to bet on tonight may take a lot of time and research. Fortunately, BettingPicks4You excels in that area as well. We carry out the research for you using our leading NHL specialists in the industry. Every game of the NHL season will be thoroughly evaluated, highlight all relevant statistics, data, and trends for the game, and include our analysts’ predictions for every game taking place tonight. Find out who we’re betting for in the NHL tonight by visiting one of those dedicated pages.

NHL Moneyline

Moneyline is the most critical betting market as far as hockey is concerned, as opposed to football and some other sports. In a money line wager, a bettor just needs to select the winning team, with the payout that will be dependent on the odds set by sportsbooks. In this wagering market, bettors only need to choose the winning team, regardless of the margin of victory. There will be a favorite and an underdog, with a payout that will depend on which team you select.

For instance, in a matchup between the St. Louis Blues and Avalanche, you might get the following odds: St Louis Blues +125, Colorado Avalanche -152.  This means that the Avalanche are the favorites, and a bettor would need to stake $152 to win $100 (or $15.2 to get a $10 return). A wager on the underdog Blues will get a return of $125 for a winning $100 bet. As you can see, backing the underdog will return a bigger payout than wagering on the favorite. Since the margin between two teams is pretty small in hockey, point spreads is not as popular in hockey wagering as in other sports. With NHL Moneyline wagering, you simply need to open your sports betting app and pick a selection. Very easy indeed!

NHL Puck Line Betting

The puck line is another way of wagering on the NHL, and it is basically a version of the point spread betting applied to hockey. The puck line, similar to the run line in baseball, is usually set at a 1.5, with variable odds. This is smaller than in other sports like the NFL or NBA because, on average, a hockey game is usually decided by a single goal or two. So, these types of wagers allow some extra action on teams where you believe there will be a higher or smaller margin between them, depending on whether you back the favorite or the underdog.

So, when considering a puck line bet, bettors are basically deciding if a team can win by two or more goals. Let’s do an example to better clarify this concept: In a matchup between St. Louis and Colorado, the Blues might be +1.5 (-240) while the Avalanche -1.5 (+190). A $100 bet on the favored Avalanche would return a $190 profit if they could win by 2 or more goals. On the other hand, you would need to stake $240 on the Blues to get a potential return of $100.

As mentioned earlier, the puck line is usually set at 1.5, but that can move as high as 2.5 depending on the match type. The sportsbooks predict a match ending with a high margin when a poor defensive team faces a strong attacking opponent. Wagering the puck line allows you to have better odds of picking a winner, especially when backing a favorite in what is expected to be a one-sided affair.

NHL Totals (Over/Under) Betting

The over/under is a type of bet based on the total number of goals scored by both teams in a matchup. It is similar to the type of bet that bettors would find in other sports. In the NHL Totals (Over/Under) betting market, the bettor needs to decide whether the total goals will be “over” or “under” a line set by the oddsmakers.

Let’s take another example: in the matchup between St. Louis and Colorado, the line might be set with a total of 6.5. If the match ends up with seven or more goals, the ‘over’ bettors will win; if it ends with fewer than seven goals, it will be the ‘under’ bettors to win instead. It is important to remember that the lines can move depending on which teams are involved.

Also, sportsbooks are looking to balance the amount wagered on each side to reduce their liability, as sportsbooks profit by taking the ‘vig’ or ‘juice’, which is a percentage of the total bet. Totals wagers are particularly interesting when you are unsure of who will win the match but have a pretty good idea of how many goals will be scored in a matchup.

NHL Parlay Betting

Similarly to other sports, parlay wagering could be a very entertaining way to bet on multiple events or event outcomes. In a parlay, a bettor can add multiple selections to a single bet. To win an NHL parlay, you would need all those selections to be correct, as if only one loses, the entire bet is a loser. Indeed, this is challenging, but on the positive side, if you hit a parlay, the payout will have significantly higher odds than wagering on a single match or outcome.

Let’s say that you are placing a parlay wager with three teams. A bettor could get a +600 payout if all of these teams win, so a $100 bet will return $600. This, of course, is determined by the odds of the different selections and can be higher or lower if the teams are underdogs or favorite. Depending on how much the bettor is prepared to risk, a parlay wager can have two to twelve selections. Not only can different matches be added, but bettors can also mix in totals or other sports to make the parlay even more interesting.

NHL Futures Betting

NHL Futures is one of the most popular forms of sports betting, with hockey offering plenty of long-term opportunities. When wagering on futures, a player predicts that a certain outcome will happen at the end of the season. Not surprisingly, the most popular NHL futures wagering is on the Stanley Cup winner, with bookmakers offering odds on all 31 teams to secure the championship. NHL Futures odds are available throughout the season, yet the best opportunities are usually available well before the final part of the campaign.

But the Stanley Cup isn’t the only bet available for NHL futures betting. For instance, you can predict things like Conference winners, over/unders points in the table for individual teams, regular-season point totals for players, team leading scorers, and other awards like the Vezina Trophy.

NHL Live Betting

NHL Live betting has become more and more popular in recent times, as bettors are keen to get involved while the action unfolds. All the best online sportsbooks are now offering the opportunity to bet live with odds continuously updated in several wagering markets like totals, puck lines, moneyline and other specific wager types.

Bettors can also cash out or hedge their pre-game bets while the action is played out on the ice. When betting live on the NHL, the bettor should check several facts, like injuries, scoring leaders, the ability for a team to close out a game, or the ability for a team to maintain a lead.

NHL Offseason 2022 Odds and Betting

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, four games to two. The Avalanche had a strong season in which they were the Stanley Cup favorites from the beginning to the end, and they will once again be the front-runners for the 2022–2023 NHL season. Many of the top clubs spent the summer making changes to their rosters in the hopes of defeating the Avalanche in the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. The season starts in mid-October and ends with the playoffs in June 2023.

The deal between the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers, in which the Flames shipped Matthew Tkachuk to Florida in return for Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar, was likely the most significant transaction of the offseason. These were two of the NHL’s greatest teams, and Huberdeau was an MVP front-runner for much of the 2022 campaign.

As a result of the trade, the Panthers are now perhaps the best club in the Eastern Conference going into the 2022–2023 season. The Flames are still expected to be a very successful club, but they also lost forward Johnny Gaudreau, whose decision to join the Columbus Blue Jackets shocked most of the hockey world.
