We are on our way to week three of the NFL season! This new week will kick off with a game Thursday night between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. Both teams come into this game with an even 1-1 record, as both won their season opener and lost last weeks matchups. The Browns have been trying to move on from the short lived Baker Mayfield era, while the Steelers are hoping former Bear Mitchell Trubisky can be a short term solution at quarterback.

Through the first two weeks the Cleveland offense has shown no signs of missing Baker, as they’re averaging 28 points per game, although rushing has been the key factor for them early in the season. For Pittsburgh, offense has been tough to come by through the first two weeks. The Steelers are averaging only 18.5 points and 264 yards of offense per game. Defending the passing game of opposing offenses seem to be both teams weakness on the defensive side of the ball.

Thursday night games are always tough to gauge because both teams don’t have much time to heal and prepare from their previous week. Pittsburgh has to go on the road, which isn’t easy for a short week. The Browns have leaned on running back Nick Chubb and wide receiver Amari Cooper through their first two games, and we think both players will have a big games Thursday. We will take Cleveland to win and cover the -4.5 points against Pittsburgh.

Tip Reasoning

Key Stat: Browns offense is first in rushing yards

  • Cleveland is 7th in the league in scoring
  • Browns defense is 26th in the league in scoring defense
  • Nick Chubb has 3 touchdowns this season

Our second bet of the Steelers-Browns Thursday night matchup is the Over/Under total of 38.5 points. This total is an extremely low line for an NFL regular season game. In fact, 38.5 points is usually the Over/Under total you would see in preseason games where the starters only play a couple of possessions. The Steelers are a possession, run the clock type of offense. When you pair the slow pace of Pittsburgh with the heavy running style of the Browns, the clock will be moving at a faster pace than normal. However, the Browns defense hasn’t been able to stop anybody this year, and the Steelers are missing their best defensive player in T.J. Watt to injury.

What does this all mean for Thursday night? We think Cleveland should be able to move the ball with Chubb or Cooper on the outside, which will force the Steelers to play faster to keep pace. We will take Over 38.5 points on Thursday night.
