Kim Si-Woo competed at the Open Championship the previous month in an unusual way, holding the fifth spot after 54 holes before finishing tied for 15th, easily his highest finish in the event.

But it won’t come as a shock to anyone if his name appears near the the top of the leaderboard in this event; in fact, it will be eagerly anticipated. Kim won here for the first time on the PGA Tour in 2016, and since then, he has recorded a sixth (in 2019), 3rd (in 2020), and 2nd (2021).

Strokes Gained: Approach seems to be a key determinant of success on this short par 70 course. Kim has finished second, third, and fifth in that division at Sedgefield, and his great performances have been fuelled by approach play instead of putting. After placing in the top 15 at St. Andrews, he had a week off before tied for 14th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in the last event in Detroit.

Donald Ross designed both Sedgefield and Detroit GC, so he should do well. Kim also strengthens the remarkable link between Sedgefield and TPC Sawgrass. The Players Championship, which he claimed in 2017, was also won by five of the previous eleven Wyndham champions. Kim is able can come and collect the trophy once more.

Key Stat: The 29-year-old was fourth at halfway stage of his debut in 2018

  • Keith Mitchell finished tied for 36th at the Scottish Open. He shot a 69 on the Old Course in round two and 66 in round three
  • Mitchell finished this year at Sawgrass in a tie for thirteenth place
  • He ranks 5th for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee, 19th for Birdie Average, and 16th for Scoring Average.

Keith Mitchell’s name started to emerge on a few betting slips for the Open Championship at St. Andrews after it was revealed that his father was also a member there and that his sister studied a university there.

He didn’t make the cut despite having more course knowledge, but he must have had a good time in Scotland since he shot a 69 on the Old Course in round two and finished with a 66 to tie for 36th in the Scottish Open. Mitchell had been in great form before departing for the UK as he secured a top 20 at Memorial, then finished in ties for 7th at the Canadian Open and sixth at the Travelers Championship.
Mitchell had a fantastic season, which is evident by his 38th-place finishing in the FedEx Cup standings. Mitchell finished this year at Sawgrass in a tie for thirteenth place.

When we consider at his other statistics, he ranks 5th for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee, 19th for Birdie Average, and 16th for Scoring Average. He was fourth at the halfway stage of his debut in 2018 when he began with 65-66, and has begun pretty well the year, despite the fact that the course form of 55-MC-41 won’t exactly make the heart race.

Given his positive course memories and upbeat thoughts following his trip to St. Andrews, Mitchell seems like a fair deal at this big pricing in a field with limited depth.
